Research Shows PET as a Valuable Tool for Mesothelioma Diagnosis and Treatment
Advancements in science and technology is constantly playing a role in the treatment of man’s diseases and afflictions and the latest research shows that Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is the latest and best news for mesothelioma patients for a long time.
As a result of research by 15 British scientists, PET has been proven to be one of the best tools for predicting how patients will respond to mesothelioma treatment and also can be used as a tool in diagnosing the patients; but what is PET? This is Wikipedia’s definition of the technology:
Positron emission tomography (PET) is a nuclear medicine imaging technique which produces a three-dimensional image or picture of functional processes in the body. The system detects pairs of gamma rays emitted indirectly by a positron-emitting radionuclide (tracer), which is introduced into the body on a biologically active molecule.
Eleven of the 15 studies was based on the use of PET with a fluorodeoxyglucose marker (FDG). The malignant mesothelioma cells in that study absorbed more of the FDG than the normal cells and patients whose bodies absorbed more of the marker had a shorter survival rate and quicker tumor progression compared to a patient who absorbed less.

It can guide further management by predicting the response to chemotherapy and excluding surgery in patients with extrathoracic disease. Combined PET-CT has additional benefits in accurately staging disease.”This is good news for mesothelioma patients as any new mesothelioma diagnosis and treatment is welcome, considering the high death rate from the lethal disease.
